QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Q and A

All the cool kids smoke! Am I the only one in my grade who doesn’t want to end up smelling like an ashtray?

I don’t really want to smoke, but the kids that do seem like they’re having a lot of fun, and I don’t want to miss out. What should I do?

Are there any kids trying to tell other kids about not smoking?

QuestionAll the cool kids smoke! Am I the only one in my grade who doesn’t want to end up smelling like an ashtray?

AnswerNo way! Research shows most kids don’t smoke. Of 100 kids, only 13 have smoked at all in the last month. And only 8 smoke regularly. That means that 92 kids out of 100 don’t smoke normally, and a full 87 don’t smoke ever. That means that not smoking is much more popular than smoking. The only thing you need to do to be cool is be you.

QuestionI don’t really want to smoke, but the kids that do seem like they’re having a lot of fun, and I don’t want to miss out. What should I do?

AnswerThat’s great that you know you don’t want to smoke; you should be proud of yourself. There are lots of other ways to have a good time-without putting yourself at risk: try out for a play, go to a concert, or learn how to play the guitar and have fun! Most kids aren’t smoking, so you should definitely be able to find cool (smoke-free) kids to hang with.

QuestionAre there any kids trying to tell other kids about not smoking?

AnswerYou bet! Lots of kids work on the truth campaign (www.thetruth.com). Truth is an edgy “roots revolution.” It’s kids seeking out the truth about smoking, and spreading the facts. It’s kids talking to kids. Check them out!
