Sorry, that is incorrect.
Eating a lot of sugar doesn't make you get diabetes. Any kind of carbohydrate you eat turns into glucose, or blood sugar, in the body, even if it's not a food that is sweet. Being overweight does increase your chance of developing diabetes, though, so that's one more reason why it's good to try to stick mostly to foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meat and dairy products, and save the sweets for special occasions.
