تائیوان (Taiwan) (تلفظ: i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/؛ چینی: 臺灣 یا 台灣; پینین: Táiwān) کا رسمی نام جمہوریہ چین ہے۔ عمومی طور پر تائیوان کہتے ہیں۔ اس کا پرانا نام فارموسا ہے۔وہ ممالک جو اقوام متحدہ کے رکن نہیں ہیں ان میں تائیوان سب سے زیادہ آبادی والا ملک ہے۔ تائیوان پر چین کا دعوٰی ہے کہ یہ عوامی جمہوریہ چین کا حصہ ہے اور چین اسے اپنا ایک اکائی مانتا ہے۔ چینگ خاندان کے زوال کے بعد چین کے مرکزی علاقے پر عوامی جمہوریہ چین کا ریاست قائم ہوا جبکہ تائیوان پر جاپانیوں نے قبضہ کیا اور یہ علاقہ ان کے یراقتدار آیا۔ جب جاپان نے 1945 میں جنگ کے دوران میں ہتھیار ڈال دیے اس وقت تائیوان جمہوریہ چین کے قبضے میں جبکہ چین کے دیگر علاقے کمیونسٹوں کے قبضے میں آئے۔ اس وقت جمہوریہ چین (تائیوان) اپنے آپ کو چین سرزمین کا اصل اور جائز حکومت مانتی ہے جبکہ عوامی جمہوریہ چین اور چین کی کمیونسٹوں کو قابضین کی نگاہ سے دیکھتی ہے۔ دوسری طرف عوامی جمہوریہ چین بحی اسے جائ حکومت تسلیم نہیں کرتی اور وہ ممالک جو تائیوان (جمہوریہ چین) سے تعلقات قائم کریں گے ان سے تمام تر سفارتی تعلقات ختم کرنے کا اعلان کر چکی ہے۔ اس لئے عالم سطح پر زیادہ تر ممالک جن کا کسی نہ کسی قسم کا انحصار عوامی جمہوریہ چین پر ہے یا اس سے تعلق ہے وہ تائیوان کو بطور ملک تسلیم نہیں کرتے۔

a. ^ Before relocating to Taiwan, the capital of the ROC was نانجنگ۔ After the relocation of government to Taiwan, چیانگ کائی شیک declared تائی پے as the wartime capital. However, بمطابق 2009، the constitution does not mention the name of the ROC capital; therefore, some argue that the de jure capital is still نانجنگ۔ However, the ROC does not currently control it.
