DSEPD's workforce activities support public health and health care collaboration, which can be fostered by:
- Practical tools to support integration
- Educating the next generation of the public health and healthcare workforce in a shared vision of population health
- Training the current public health and healthcare workforce regarding the need to work together and how to work with each other toward the common goal of population health
- Strategic coordination among partners with activities in this arena
The 2012 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Primary Care and Public Health: Exploring Integration to Improve Population Health, identifies a set of core principles derived from successful integration efforts — including a common goal of improving population health, as well as involving the community in defining and addressing its needs. The principles provided in this report can serve as a roadmap to move the nation toward a more efficient health system.

Educating the next generation of public health and healthcare workers
Academic Partnerships to Improve Health: CDC's cooperative agreements with academic associations support the integration of population health concepts in health professional education and enhance interprofessional experiences for public health, medical, and nursing students.
The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship: a one-year fellowship in applied epidemiology for medical students, designed to produce physicians with a population health perspective.
