National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day - March 10

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, sponsored by the Office of Women’s Health of the Department of Health and Human Services, is observed on March 10. The goals of this event are to raise awareness about the need for all women, especially pregnant women, to be tested and treated for HIV.

This infographic presents some facts about HIV among women. There were nearly 40,000 HIV diagnoses in 2015 in the US. Over 7,000 of them were among women. But we are seeing progress. From 2010 to 2014: 20% decrease in HIV diagnoses among all women, 24% decrease among African American women, 16% decrease among Hispanic/Latina women.

Not all women and girls who are living with HIV are getting the care they need. Of women who are living with HIV, 89% have received a diagnosis, 76% were linked to care within 1 month, 57% are retained in care, and 52% are virally suppressed (i.e., have a low enough level of the virus to stay healthy and reduce transmission risk).
