তাইওয়ান (ইংরেজি: Taiwan; /ˈtaɪˈwɑːn/ (শুনুন) TY-WAHN-' চীনা: 臺灣 বা 台灣; ফিনিন: Táiwān) সরকারীভাবে চীন প্রজাতন্ত্র (ROC; চীনা: 中華民國; ফিনিন: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), পূর্ব এশিয়ার একটি দ্বীপ,যা তাইওয়ান প্রণালীর পূর্বে চীনা মূল ভুখন্ডএর দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব উপকূলে অবস্হিত। তাইওয়ান হচ্ছে ইউরোপ এশিয়া প্লেট ভূগঠনপ্রণালী দ্বারা গঠিত এবং ফিলিপাইন এর দক্ষিণে অবস্হিত। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ শেষে দ্বীপপুঞ্জসমূহ প্রজাতন্ত্রী চীনএর অধীনে হ্য়। সাধারণত প্রজাতন্ত্রী চীন-শাসিত এলাকা বোঝাতেও "তাইওয়ান" ব্যবহৃত হয়। প্রজাতন্ত্রী চীন প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরের তাইওয়ান দ্বীপ, অর্কিড আইল্যান্ড, গ্রীন আইল্যান্ড শাসন করে থাকে। এছাড়া পিশকাদোরিশ (পর্তুগিজ: Pescadores প্যিশ্‌কাদ়োর‌্যিশ্‌ অর্থাৎ "মৎস্যজীবীগণ"), কিনমেন, ফুচিয়েন তীরবর্তী মাৎসু আইল্যান্ড প্রভৃতি দ্বীপও শাসন করে। তাইওয়ান ও ফেংহু দ্বীপপুঞ্জগুলো (তাইপে ও কাওসিউং পৌরসভা বাদে) প্রজাতন্ত্রী চীনের তাইওয়ান প্রদেশ হিসেবে প্রশাসিত হয়।

তাইওয়ান দ্বীপের মূল ভূখণ্ড ফুরমোজা (পর্তুগিজে ইলিয়া ফ়ুর্‌মোজ়া অর্থাৎসুন্দরী দ্বীপ) নামেও পরিচিত যা পূর্ব এশিয়ার চীনা মূল-ভূখন্ড তীরবর্তী অঞ্চল এবং জাপানের মূল-ভূখন্ডের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিমে অবস্থিত। জাপানের রিউকিউ দ্বীপপুঞ্জের ঠিক পশ্চিমেই তাইওয়ান দ্বীপের অবস্থান। এর পূর্বে প্রশান্ত মহাসাগর, দক্ষিণে দক্ষিণ চীন সাগর ও লুজন খাড়ি, পশ্চিমে তাইওয়ান খাড়ি এবং পূর্বে পূর্ব চীন সাগর অবস্থিত। দ্বীপটি ৩৯৪ কিলোমিটার (২৪৫ মাইল) দীর্ঘ এবং ১৪৪ কিলোমিটার (৮৯ মাইল) প্রশস্ত। এখানে কাড়া পর্বত ও ট্রপিকাল বন রয়েছে।

তাইওয়ানের মোট লোকসংখ্যা প্রায় ২ কোটি ৩০ লক্ষ। তন্মধ্যে হোকলো সম্প্রদায় সর্বাধিক এবং আরো আছে হাক্কা, প্রাচীন তাইওয়ানবাসী, চীনা তাইওয়ানবাসী, প্রবাসী তাইওয়ানবাসী প্রমূখ সম্প্রদায়। প্রধান ভাষা হচ্ছে ম্যান্ডারিন এবং উপভাষা সমূহ হচ্ছে তাইওয়ানি(মিননান উপভাষা), হাক্কা উপভাষা ইত্যাদি। উচ্চপ্রযুক্তি, উষ্ণমন্ডলীয় কৃষিজাতপণ্য প্রভৃতি রপ্তানি করে অজস্র বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা বিনিময় করে। ন্যানোপ্রযুক্তি, অপ্টো ইলেকট্রনিক, পর্যটন প্রমূখ শিল্প তাইওয়ানের উন্নয়নে সহায়ক।

ইতিহাস

২য় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় গণচীনের জাপানী হামলা প্রতিরোধ যুদ্ধকালে চীনের কুওমিনতাং পার্টি চীনের কমিউনিস্ট পার্টির সঙ্গে জাপানের আগ্রাসন বিরোধী জাতীয় যুক্তফ্রণ্ট গড়ে তুলে জাপানী সাম্রাজ্যবাদীদের আক্রমণ প্রতিরোধ করে। জাপান-বিরোধী প্রতিরোধ যুদ্ধটি জয়যুক্ত হবার পর চিয়াং কাইশেকের নেতৃত্বাধীন কুওমিনতাং গোষ্ঠি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সমর্থনপুষ্ট হয়ে সারা দেশ জুড়ে গৃহযুদ্ধ বাধায়। চীনের কমিউনিস্ট পার্টির নেতৃত্বে চীনা জনগণ তিন বছরের বেশি সময় মুক্তিযুদ্ধ চালান। তখনকার কুওমিনতাং গোষ্ঠির অনুসৃত গণবিরোধী নীতির দরুন সারা দেশের বিভিন্ন জাতির জনগণ এই গোষ্ঠী ঘৃণা করে, ফলে কুওমিনতাং পার্টির “চীন প্রজাতন্ত্র” (বা রিপাবলিক অব চায়না) সরকার উত্খাত করা হয়। ১৯৪৯ সালের ১লা অক্টোবর চীন গণ প্রজাতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় এবং তা চীনের একমাত্র বৈধ সরকার হয়ে দাঁড়ায়। কুওমিনতাং গোষ্ঠির কিছু সৈন্য বাহিনী এবং সরকারী কর্মকর্তা সরে গিয়ে তাইওয়ান আঁকড়ে ধরে বসে। তারা তখনকার মার্কিন সরকারের সমর্থনে তাইওয়ান প্রণালীর দু’ তীরের মধ্যে বিচ্ছিন্নতা সৃষ্টি করেন।

It does not include citizens of the People's Republic of China who more recently moved to Taiwan.
  3. Taiwanese aborigines are officially categorised into 14 separate ethnic groups by the Republic of China.
  4. Although the territories controlled by the ROC imply that the demonym is "Taiwanese", some consider that it is "Chinese" due to the claims of the ROC over all of China. Taiwanese people have various opinions regarding their own national identity.
  5. The UN has not calculated an HDI for the ROC, which is not a member nation. The ROC government calculated its HDI for 2012 to be 0.890, which would rank it 23rd among countries.
