Foundational Programs

Through its foundational programs, CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) works with state health agencies, territories, tribes and tribal organizations, and other key organizations to develop, implement, and promote effective cancer prevention and control practices.

Colorectal Cancer Control Program

The Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP) currently funds 23 states, 6 universities, and one American Indian tribe to increase colorectal (colon) cancer screening rates among men and women aged 50 years and older.

National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program

Since 1991, DCPC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) has provided screening and diagnostic exams for breast and cervical cancer to low-income women with little or no health insurance. Currently, the NBCCEDP funds all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 6 U.S. territories, and 13 American Indian/Alaska Native tribes or tribal organizations to provide screening services for breast and cervical cancer. To increase screening rates, the program also supports education and outreach activities, case management services, and research.

National Program of Cancer Registries

DCPC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) collects data on cancer occurrence; the type, extent, and location of cancers; and the type of initial treatment. The NPCR currently supports central cancer registries in 46 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Pacific Island Jurisdictions, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, NPCR and the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, in collaboration with the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, publish annual cancer incidence and death data in the United States Cancer Statistics: Incidence and Mortality Web-based Report.

National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program

Today, the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP) funds all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 6 U.S. Associated Pacific Islands and Puerto Rico, and 8 tribes or tribal organizations to establish coalitions, assess the burden of cancer, determine priorities, and develop and implement comprehensive cancer control programs.
