ASMP/CDSMP Meta-Analysis Executive Summary

Meta-analyses were conducted to examine the specific effects of two self-management education programs developed at Stanford University, Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) and Arthritis Self-Management Program (ASMP).  Each meta-analysis combined the results of more than 20 studies of the intervention.  In contrast to previous chronic disease self management meta-analyses, these analyses looked at each intervention program in isolation, combined both randomized controlled studies with longitudinal program evaluations, and looked at a wide range of health outcomes.  The results of the meta-analyses documented decreases in pain, depression, fear and frustration, and increases in energy, exercise and confidence in ability to manage chronic conditions.

An Executive Summary [PDF – 1.19MB] of the full report Sorting through the Evidence for the Arthritis Self Management Program and the Chronic Disease Self Management Program is available.

The results of the meta-analyses were used to create two issue briefs to help introduce self-management education interventions to organizations who may adopt and deliver the intervention  and to health care professionals and others who may recommend the intervention to their patients.
