TB Control Program staff will view and discuss four films on vaccine development produced by the Aeras Corporation. The films are titled: The Global Epidemic, The Rise of a Superbug, The Innovation Movement, and The Last Mile. In addition, an article, written by the Assistant Medical Director of the TB Control Program, which recently appeared in the Public Health Newsletter, Rx For Prevention, will be summarized and discussed.

Kentucky

The theme for the Respiratory Health Association’s annual event is Find TB. Treat TB. Working together to eliminate TB. Topics will include local updates, drug resistant TB, TB in the homeless population, the EDN project, and the ACA for immigrants and refugees with TB. This event is for all working with TB including healthcare professionals and community outreach staff. New York

Approximately 9 million people develop active, communicable TB and 2 million die from TB-related causes each year. In NYC, the average number of TB cases is over twice the national average.

The second annual NYC world TB day walk and rally will raise awareness about TB and available TB services. This event has been scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014. The event will unite a diverse group of community stakeholders to build partnerships, educate the community and raise awareness that TB is still a prominent health issue in NYC.

2014 World TB Day Symposium

“New Challenges and New Tools in the Diagnosis and Management of Tuberculosis”

The Tuberculosis Elimination Program of Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), in collaboration with the Vanderbilt Tuberculosis Center (VTC) and the Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center (SNTC), will present a “2014 World TB Day Symposium: New Challenges and New Tools in the Diagnosis and Management of Tuberculosis” April 1- 2, 2014, in Nashville. The event targets clinicians and will engage participants through presentations of actual TB cases in Tennessee, analysis of clinical challenges and opportunities by a panel of clinical and laboratory experts, lectures, and participant discussions. Registration and continuing medical education (CME) credits are free, but registration in advance is required.

Virginia

Virginia’s TB Control and Prevention Program will present a videoconference for local health districts across the state on March 21 to commemorate World TB Day. The program will examine 10 years of trends in epidemiology, explore cohort review achievements and future challenges, and provide TB program updates. In addition, an update on the Gene Xpert test will be presented. Additional plans include use of social media to provide messaging to clinicians and the general public about tuberculosis. Key messages will be transmitted via Twitter and posted on Virginia Department of Health’s website homepage. Some local health districts plan awareness activities.

Washington State

The Washington State Tuberculosis Advisory Council, Firland Foundation, and Seattle BioMed will host World TB Day 2014, a free event at Seattle Town Hall. This educational event provides an opportunity for the public to learn how TB affects individuals, communities, and collective resources. Participants will join in small group discussions to learn more about topics such as: TB Vaccines, Multi-Drug Resistant and Extensively Drug Resistant TB, a Photovoice project that illustrates local TB cases and TB case-studies for the non-physician.

On Monday, March 17, the Snohomish Health District is hosting a week long TB display and TB Photovoice exhibit in the Health District atrium. We are partnering with Teresa Rugg, director of the TB Photovoice Project, and will have the exhibit up all week long. People can come and view this exhibit during normal business hours (8 AM–5 PM). On Friday, March 21, Dr. Gary Goldbaum will give a short presentation, TB Photovoice participants will share their stories, and a TB Public Health Nurse will be available to answer TB-related questions and demonstrate TB testing. International World TB Day Events

The American Center, Public Affairs Section, U.S. Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City, in collaboration with CDC Vietnam, will host an educational event to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day.
