In honor of World TB Day, Alaska Native Health Consortium will be hosting a webinar entitled “TB in Alaska.” This webinar will provide clinicians and health care personnel with an overview of the history of TB in Alaska, an update on current TB outbreaks in Alaska, current recommendations for TB testing and treatment, guidelines on the logistics of TB control in Alaska, discuss new treatment and diagnostics available to providers, and discuss issues with TB infections and air travel.

California

TB Control plans to receive a proclamation from the County Board of
Supervisors. It will recognize the impact that TB has had on populations, both globally and locally. It will highlight intervention strategies such as newer drug regimens and diagnostic screening tools, and will also provide a brief background on the history of World TB Day. The County Board of Supervisors will proclaim March 24th as World TB Day in Imperial County. In addition, the LTBI Treatment Medical Update will bring together local physicians and provide an opportunity to discuss LTBI treatment options. The keynote speaker is Dr. Neha Shah, MD, MPH, a Field Medical Officer from the CDC Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE). The Imperial County Public Health Department TB Control Unit looks forward to launching updated LTBI treatment objectives, in what is hoped to be a collaborative effort to achieve the common goal of improved LTBI treatment adherence and reduced numbers of LTBI and active TB cases in Imperial County.

The San Francisco Tuberculosis Control Section will be commemorating World Tuberculosis Day 2013 at the City College of San Francisco (CCSF), recognizing decades of partnership with the Student Health Center to provide access to TB screening and treatment to thousands of CCSF students.

San Francisco will recognize World TB Day with a Media Release on March 18th announcing Proclamation from the City and also an award for an Outstanding TB Control public health nurse.

Colorado

The Colorado Coalition Against Tuberculosis (CCAT), which includes partners from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Denver Metro TB clinic, and RESULTS, is hosting the 5th Annual “Stop TB Trot” 5k run/walk. This event will promote awareness of tuberculosis infection and disease in Colorado and around the world. The event is a fundraiser to help underserved patients in the metro area by providing such things as temporary housing, food and transportation while they are on treatment.

The theme for the Respiratory Health Association’s annual event is Stop TB In My Lifetime: Addressing TB in High-Risk Groups. Topics will include local updates on TB cases, TB in the homeless population, TB and HIV co-infection, and TB with immigrant and refugee populations. The Ohio Department of Health Tuberculosis Program will commemorate World TB Day by hosting the annual TB conference on March 22, 2013 in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Virginia

Virginia’s TB Control and Prevention Program will commemorate World TB Day on Thursday, March 21, 2013. A videoconference program for local health districts across the state will address the theme “Stop TB in My Lifetime: What it Means to Me.” A clinician, nurse and outreach worker will share personal insights on this theme based on their experiences working in TB. The agenda will also include program updates and the release of 2012 TB surveillance data in Virginia. Virginia plans to share updated TB information with: clinicians via listserv; the public through a press release; and health department employees through internal messaging.

Washington State

During a brown bag event on March 20, we will be presenting information about the spread of drug resistant TB. The presentation will include basic TB information followed by a YouTube video of the experience of an MDR patient in the state of Tennessee. The event will be held at the Washington State Department of Health campus where staff in all offices, as well as local health jurisdiction staff in nearby counties, will be invited to join.

International World TB Day Events

Indonesia

The Ministry of Health will participate in the following events:

  1. A one-day symposium in collaboration with the Pulmonologist association. Estimated number of participants is about 1,500. This includes practice practitioners, partners from civil society, professional organization, community, etc.
  2. A “5 K Run for TB” in collaboration with HOPE to promote public awareness of TB. Estimated number of participants is about 10, 000, which will consist of partners from civil society, community, association of athletic federation, students, etc.
  3. Charity activities organized by some partners/NGOs (like social services) for the community to identify TB suspects.
  4. In the provinces, Indonesia of ARMI board in collaboration with Provincial Health Office will launch a declaration of letter agreement from the Ministry of Defense, to support the TB Program in North Sulawesi province. In East Java, ARSABAPI (the association of lung clinics and Hospital) will have a one day seminar for members.
