Enhancing Clarity and Transparency of Public Health Guidelines

March 28-29, 2013

This 1.5 day course was offered and recorded March 28-29, 2013 to familiarize participants with common problems in public health guidelines development and best practices for avoiding them. Software tools to facilitate guideline development were demonstrated. Attendees had hands-on experience applying tools to current public health and clinical guidelines. Slides and the recordings supported only the lecture portions. Hands-on portions of the training were not recorded.

The course was sponsored by the CDC Office of the Associate Director for Science, Office of Science Quality (OSQ), and taught by Dr. Richard Shiffman, MD, MCIS, Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Director of the Center for Medical Informatics at the Yale School of Medicine.

After viewing the lectures within this course, you will be able to:

• Identify and describe factors that contribute to poor guideline quality and implementability;
• Be able to access and use GEM Cutter, eGLIA, and BRIDGE-Wiz software programs to mark up guidelines, create reports, identify barriers to implementation, and create recommendations;
• Create guideline recommendations that are clear, transparent, and implementable.
