Scientific Ethics Training (Obtain SEV Number)

All CDC/ATSDR investigators conducting research on human subjects must obtain basic training on human research protections before they may conduct research on human subjects at CDC. Training requirements are based on staff duties and responsibilities. The training requirements are currently being expanded. In the interim, investigators who need to complete basic training must select one of the following three options:

  1. Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Course
    • Go to the CITI Website
    • Create a username and password and navigate through the various introductory pages. If you already have a username and password, then click “Add a course or update your learner groups for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention”
    • Answer the questions as follows:
      • Question #1 – select either “Biomedical Research” or “Social & Behavioral Research” based on the group most appropriate to the anticipated research activities
      • Question #2 – select the corresponding Responsible Conduct of Research course
      • Question #3 — If you use or administer drugs, devices, biologics, dietary supplements, or dye contrast in conducting your research, or if you oversee, supervise, or administer this type of research, then select “YES” to take the Good Clinical Practice course. Otherwise, select “NO.”
  2. NIH Protecting Human Research Participants (PHRP) Course
  3. FHI360 Research Ethics Training Curriculum

Upon completion of the training, investigators must submit the certificate of completion via email to huma@cdc.gov or via fax to 404-639-3249. A Scientific Ethics Verification (SEV) number will be assigned following receipt of the certificate.

Note: There are separate training requirements for investigators performing procedures on live animals.
