Cynthia G. Whitney, MD, MPH, is Chief of the Respiratory Diseases Branch in the Division of Bacterial Diseases within CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Dr. Whitney has published >230 scientific publications on pneumococcal disease epidemiology, drug resistance, pneumonia, respiratory disease outbreaks, and vaccines. She is a frequent consultant for the World Health Organization and serves on multiple advisory boards and study committees and is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Dr. Whitney graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science and from the University of Minnesota Medical School. She obtained a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University. She completed medical residencies in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota’s program and in Preventive Medicine through CDC and is boarded in those two specialties.
