Hispanic women have a 30-40 percent higher risk of having babies with these birth defects. NTDs occur in the first few weeks of pregnancy, very often before a woman even knows she is pregnant. Folic acid has been found to prevent up to 70% of NTDs. Yet, only 21% of Hispanic women report consuming enough folic acid as compared to 41% of white women.
