Prevalence and Correlates of Sleep Apnea Among U.S. Male Veterans, 2005–2014

U.S. male veterans who experienced psychological distress, had unmet mental health care needs, or had been diagnosed with asthma were more likely to have sleep apnea. Using data from the 2005–2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, researchers found that the prevalence of sleep apnea increased from 3.7 percent to 8.1 percent from 2005 through 2014. Although mental health is a major public health issue, especially among U.S. veterans, researchers note that few studies have examined many of the comorbid conditions that may be associated with mental illness among this vulnerable population. The study expands this research and highlights the need for more rigorous screening of sleep apnea and better sleep apnea treatment among U.S. male veterans.
