What We Do

CDC-Dominican Republic (CDC-DR) works with the Ministry of Health (MoH) on several surveillance projects, including a national electronic surveillance system for reportable diseases; an electronic tuberculosis reporting system; and a monitoring system for patients receiving treatment for HIV/AIDS.

CDC-DR’s laboratory systems strengthening with the Stepwise Laboratory Improvement Program Towards Accreditation (SLIPTA) was developed by CDC and the World Health Organization’s Africa Regional Office (WHO/AFRO) in 2009.

Additionally, CDC-DR supports community-based and hospital-based HIV prevention programs that focus on men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM), people who inject drugs, and mobile populations (construction workers, agricultural workers, street vendors, and truck drivers).

CDC-DR has strengthened Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) in 16 key hospitals that account for approximately 80% of all births in the country.
