Vaginal and Vulvar Cancer Epidemiology in the U.S.

Vaginal Cancer Epidemiology

  • 1,312 new cases were diagnosed in 2014 (rate = 0.7 per 100,000 women).
  • 430 deaths in 2014 (rate = 0.2 per 100,000 women).

Vulvar Cancer Epidemiology

  • 5,133 new cases were diagnosed in 2014 (rate = 2.6 per 100,000 women).
  • 1,085 deaths in 2014 (rate = 0.5 per 100,000 women).

Compared to other cancers, vaginal and vulvar cancers are relatively rare. The most common gynecologic cancer is uterine, followed by ovarian and cervical.

Other than skin cancer, female breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., with an incidence rate of 123.9 per 100,000 women. The next nine most common cancers are: lung cancer, 50.8; colorectal cancer, 33.7; uterine cancer, 26.5; thyroid cancer, 21.4; melanomas of the skin, 16.9; non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 15.3; cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis, 11.3; pancreatic cancer, 11.1; and ovarian cancer, 11.0.
