    • Identifying local youth-friendly sexual health service providers and developing a referral system and protocol for school districts and community partners; this will assist youth in accessing needed health services and reduce stigma about receiving health care. 
    • Increasing student-led efforts to promote respect and prevent bullying. Students are developing and delivering anti-bullying messages directly to other students with presentations and materials, helping to create safe and supportive environments for all students and staff.

    • Developing an on-demand webinar for school staff and community members on sexual health education to improve awareness of district programs and help garner support from the community.
    • Facilitating district-wide trainings on the referral system and the Healthy Youth Resource Guide to help link students to youth-friendly community health service providers.
    • Providing school staff with a DC-branded LGBTQ ally badge to identify trusted adults who have been trained and have access to local youth resources; helping students needing school-based support address their health, psychological and social needs.

 

The District of Columbia Public Schools receive funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).

DC Public Schools is working toward these goals in the following ways:

    • Hosting parent sexual health education workshops throughout the district to increase parent support and engagement. 
    • Collaborating with the state education agency to develop, market and distribute the Healthy Youth Resource Guide for schools, community-based organizations and clinical providers. The guide will help students readily access services that decrease the likelihood of infection with HIV or other STDs.
    • Working with a national organization to disseminate the district’s new policy on Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Students to district administrators, school leaders, school liaisons and other support staff, which supports a safe and supportive school environment. The district also provides training on bullying prevention strategies.

    • Collaborating with state level partners to provide regional workshops for School Health Advisory, School Health Wellness Advisory and Wellness Steering Committees in Florida School Districts.
    • Disseminating a list of youth-friendly sexual health service providers by locality, including providers with experience in serving homeless youth. This will help school staff connect students to sexual health services and resources.

Vermont

The Vermont Department of Health receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to: collect and report Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles data.

The Vermont Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).

The Vermont Department of Education is working toward these goals in the following ways:

  • Using HECAT and the National Sexuality Education Standards to assist districts in assessing curricula. This allows districts to identify curricula consistent with community norms and district expansion of exemplary sexual health education programs.
  • Working with districts to develop or revise their condom availability policy. This effort reduces stigma and discomfort, providing students with additional health care resources.
  • Providing training and technical assistance to develop and support Gay Straight Alliances for school staff, expanding efforts to provide an environment where all students and staff feel safe.

Washington

The State of Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to:

  • Deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).

The Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction is working toward these goals in the following ways: 

    • Updating statewide student learning standards to incorporate guidance on sexual health education, including training teams of school staff to be comfortable, confident, and competent in providing exemplary sexuality health education. 
    • Working with partners to provide school staff training on making schools safe for all students, including LGBTQ youth. 
    • Working with partners to identify community resources that provide youth-friendly sexual health services, so schools can make referrals that meet student needs.

West Virginia

  • Collect and report Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles data.
  • Deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is working toward these goals in the following ways:

    • Assessing school districts’ progress in evaluating, adopting and implementing sexual health education curricula into their existing Human Growth & Development curricula or programs
    • Identifying youth-friendly community health services and resources and working with youth to provide clinical providers with information on confidentiality and youth-friendliness. 
    • Providing training in selected school districts to provide safe and supportive environments for sexual minority students.
