    • Developing a system to link students to youth-friendly health care providers, increasing the number of students who access needed sexual health services. 
    • Working to ensure that the district’s black and Latino male gay and bisexual students are receiving quality sexual health education in a meaningful and appropriate manner. 
    • Supporting a variety of programs to ensure safe and supportive environments for its black and Latino male gay and bisexual students. These programs include school health events and district-wide campaigns. Broward also involves youth with sexual health services assessment; youth verify that providers listed in the resources guide are welcoming to black and Latino male gay and bisexual teens.

    • Providing school staff with a DC-branded LGBTQ ally badge to identify trusted adults who have been trained and have access to local youth resources; helping students needing school-based support address their health, psychological and social needs.

 

The District of Columbia Public Schools receive funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).

DC Public Schools is working toward these goals in the following ways:

    • Hosting parent sexual health education workshops throughout the district to increase parent support and engagement. 
    • Collaborating with the state education agency to develop, market and distribute the Healthy Youth Resource Guide for schools, community-based organizations and clinical providers. The guide will help students readily access services that decrease the likelihood of infection with HIV or other STDs.
    • Working with a national organization to disseminate the district’s new policy on Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Students to district administrators, school leaders, school liaisons and other support staff, which supports a safe and supportive school environment. The district also provides training on bullying prevention strategies.

This will help schools and community health care providers improve student access to needed services.
