Strategies to Prevent Infection and Reduce Inter-individual Transmission

Overview: The University of Utah is establishing a Prevention Epicenter called Strategies to Prevent Infection and Reduce Inter-individual Transmission (SPIRIT). The research team collaborates with the Department of Veterans Affairs and affiliated academic medical centers. The goal of this center is to improve knowledge of germ transmission in order to implement new strategies to prevent and control transmission in healthcare settings. In order to achieve their research goals, investigators will integrate expertise in biomedical informatics, population analytics, mathematical modeling, cognitive psychology, and implementation science

Research Study Areas:

  • Use computer modeling to establish the impact of contact precautions on germ transmission
  • Identify factors that increase vulnerability to emerging bacteria that are resistant to multiple drugs used to treat them
  • Collaborate across a region to prevent spread of pathogens
  • Redesign personal protective equipment (PPE) to help increase adherence among healthcare workers
  • Use mathematical models to examine risks of Ebola transmission in healthcare facilities
