Overview: Researchers at the University of Iowa propose to address barriers to safe and effective use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in an effort to better protect patients and healthcare workers from infection. The diverse research team has expertise in healthcare epidemiology, infection control, and healthcare associated infection (HAI) prevention research. They plan to use numerous innovative techniques in their research, including novel technologic approaches to tracking healthcare worker movement and PPE compliance.
Research Study Areas:
- Evaluate a novel technologic approach to tracking healthcare workers’ use of PPE and adherence to other infection control practices
- Assess methods to reduce self-contamination as healthcare workers remove PPE
- Conduct randomized trial of a simple environmental intervention to prevent Clostridium difficile infection
- Determine if Ebola preparedness had beneficial effects on healthcare worker knowledge about PPE/contact precautions, contact precautions use, and hand hygiene adherence
