University of Illinois at Chicago’s Epicenter for Prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections

Overview: The University of Illinois at Chicago’s Epicenter for Prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections will conduct laboratory experiments, measurements and observations in healthcare settings to understand how healthcare activities cause viruses and bacteria in patients to contaminate the environment. The research team, who equally value patient and worker health and safety, has professional and research experience in infection control; clinical medicine; mechanistic modeling of disease transmission; industrial hygiene; and microbial risk assessment. The UIC Epicenter will involve a regional network of Chicago hospitals including University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, and St. Anthony’s Hospital.
Research Study Areas:
- Measure the activity of infectious germs in patient body fluids to understand healthcare workers’ exposure
- Identify and test the effectiveness of different interventions to prevent disease transmission, including personal protective equipment
- Develop and test methods for effective healthcare worker training
