NPHI Stories: Creating a National Surveillance System in Mozambique

National surveillance systems don’t work in vacuums—they need data. That’s why CDC and the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) are working with Mozambique’s National Institute of Health (Instituto Nacional de Saúde, INS). CDC and IANPHI have made it a priority to support INS as it works to bring together data from several, disparate surveillance systems focused on priority diseases in Mozambique.

In May 2016, CDC held the first of three workshops in Mozambique for INS staff to improve data collection and analysis to use public health data to shape policies and programs. Using the NPHI Staged Development Tool (SDT), participants identified gaps in INS sentinel surveillance based on five existing systems. . “The SDT helps us see where our system is and what we can improve,” says one workshop attendee.

Moving forward, CDC and IANPHI will continue to support INS to strengthen disease surveillance and data use based on the gaps identified in this first workshop.
