CDC’s Ebola Affected Countries Office (EACO) was established to help ministries of health and partner agencies rebuild health systems in the three countries most affected by the 2014-2015 Ebola epidemic in West Africa: Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The office worked to improve public health systems in these countries both by building on existing capabilities and by helping to strengthen public health systems created in response to Ebola. EACO also supported research and programs to meet the needs of Ebola survivors.

As of mid-2017, the Ebola Affected Countries Office has closed, but the countries continue to conduct ongoing public health system improvement under the leadership of the Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP). DGHP staff bring a broad range of technical and management expertise to CDC’s work in West Africa. Our activities continue to support the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), which aims to improve countries’ abilities to prevent, detect, and respond to health threats.
