- Current cigarette smoking: ranged from 9.7% in Utah to 26.7% in West Virginia.
- Current smokeless tobacco use: ranged from 1.4% in Hawaii to 8.8% in Montana.
- Current any cigarette/smokeless tobacco use: ranged from 11.3% in Utah to 32.2% in West Virginia.

- Current cigarette smoking was higher among men than women in 34 states.
- Current cigarette smoking among men ranged from 11.2% in Utah to 27.8% in West Virginia.
- Current smokeless tobacco use was higher among men than women in all 44 states for which statistically stable estimates could be computed.
- Current smokeless tobacco use among men ranged from 2.3% in Hawaii to 16.5% in West Virginia.
- Any cigarette/smokeless tobacco use was significantly higher among men than women in all 50 states.
- Any cigarette/smokeless tobacco use among men ranged from 14.1% in Utah to 39.2% in West Virginia.

- Among non-Hispanic whites, any cigarette/smokeless tobacco use ranged from 7.5% in the District of Columbia to 32.4% in West Virginia.
- Among non-Hispanic blacks, any cigarette/smokeless tobacco use ranged from 14.6% in Texas to 36.1% in Vermont.
- Among Hispanics, any cigarette/smokeless tobacco use ranged from 8.0% in Maryland to 45.5% in North Dakota.
