CDC has developed this Web page to help health care providers counsel their patients on the serious impact smoking has on their health and well-being. The products on this Web page are drawn from the latest Surgeon General’s Report and can be used as source materials for talking with patients about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke exposure. They include downloadable fact sheets suitable for use as patient handouts, materials for waiting rooms and patient rooms, and other products to help health care providers integrate tobacco use interventions into their patient care.
These fact sheets have been created for public health officials and others, and provide information taken from Surgeon General’s Reports about smoking and its connection to specific diseases and health conditions, such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. There are also fact sheets addressing smoking risks for particular population groups, such as women, youth, and men and women concerned about reproductive health.

Patients who want to quit smoking are three to four times more likely to succeed if they talk with their doctors first and if they take advantage of counseling resources in addition to other interventions such as nicotine replacement therapy and prescription medications. Health care practices can make a major contribution to the nation’s public health by using every patient encounter as an opportunity to educate both children and adults on the serious disease risks that spring from tobacco use.
