Exposure to Secondhand Smoke Among Students Aged 13–15 Years—Worldwide, 2000–2007

Overall, 80.3% of students aged 13–15 years had never smoked cigarettes, ranging from 87.4% in the South-East Asia region to 54.9% in the Americas.
Nearly half of students aged 13–15 years who have never smoked reported being exposed to secondhand smoke at home (47%) or in places other than the home (48%).
Students who have never smoked and were exposed to secondhand smoke at home ranged from 71.5% in Europe to 22.6% in Africa.
Never smokers exposed to secondhand smoke at home were 1.4 to 2.1 times more likely to be susceptible to initiating smoking than those not exposed.
Students who have never smoked and were exposed to secondhand smoke in places other than home ranged from 79.4% in Europe to 38.2% in Africa.
Never smokers exposed to secondhand smoke in places other than home were 1.3 to 1.8 times more likely to be susceptible to initiating smoking than those not exposed.
