Site Visits

The National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) and the Georgia Department of Public Health have arranged for conference attendees to visit one of four local community-based organizations (CBO) dedicated to community health and STD prevention. A brief description of each CBO is listed below.

The site visits will take place on Monday, June 9th from approximately 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. There is a $20 fee to cover transportation costs. Further details will be provided once you have registered. There are a limited number of spots available for each site visit and those will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Please email Kelly Mayor with any questions.

Empowerment Resource Center

Empowerment Resource Center (ERC) was established in 2003 and provides health-related programs and services, more specifically HIV and STI prevention education, risk reduction counseling, testing, referral, and treatment services, client advocacy and navigation services, and primary care linkages across. The mission of Empowerment Resource Center is to directly deliver health-related programs and services and generate solutions to community issues that impact the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). A medical home of over 500 clients, ERC provides programs and services on-site at our Comprehensive Intervention Clinic, at satellite locations, and through the ERC on the M.O.V.E. (Mobile Outreach Vehicle) program. The objective of this non-profit is to directly deliver health-related programs and services and generate solutions to community issues that impact the transmission of HIV and other STIs. The Empowerment Resource Center Comprehensive Intervention Clinic offers Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis C, Herpes, HIV, and Syphilis testing and treatment services

National AIDS and Educational Services for Minorities

National AIDS and Educational Services for Minorities (NAESM) is a non-profit community based organization that was created in an effort to counteract the ever increasing spread of HIV/AIDS in communities of color. Serving Atlanta’s minority community since 1990, the mission of NAESM is to provide national and local leadership to address the myriad of health and wellness issues confronted by black gay men through advocacy, services, and education. NAESM exists to address health disparities experienced by African American people particularly the overwhelming number of health issues that affect the lives and well-being of Black Gay Men. Throughout its 24 year history, NAESM has been a leader in helping to confront disparities in HIV testing, treatment, and access to care among minority communities in Georgia and throughout the United States. NAESM provides screenings for syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.

Positive Impact

Positive Impact was founded in 1993 in response to the HIV care needs of Atlanta’s highly stigmatized and low-income communities by a group of Atlanta area mental health care providers. They believed Atlanta needed a community-based agency dedicated to the HIV-related mental health needs of individuals living with HIV and their affected partners, family members, friends and caregivers. This nonprofit’s mission is to eliminate the risk of HIV transmission and to empower those affected by HIV through culturally competent and inclusive prevention, education, mental health and substance abuse treatment services. Positive Impact operates the MISTER (Men’s Information Services: Testing, Empowerment, Resources) Community Center, which provides HIV testing as well as screenings for syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia; and support services and resources for MSM, thanks to a generous grant from the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

SisterLove

SisterLove is a reproductive justice organization for women with a focus on HIV / AIDS. A non-profit founded in July of 1989, SisterLove, Inc. began as a volunteer group of women interested in educating Atlanta, and especially communities of women, about HIV/AIDS prevention, self-help and safer sex. SisterLove is on a mission to eradicate the adverse impact of HIV/AIDS and other reproductive health challenges upon women and their families through education, prevention, support and human rights advocacy in the United States and around the world.
