Program Science
This session will focus on four themes that are currently evolving in Program Science discourse.  

• Disparity reduction as a goal of Program Science 
• Elimination of leakages in STD/HIV prevention and treatment cascades 
• Elimination of delays in STD/HIV prevention and treatment cascades 
• Integration of STD/HIV treatment and prevention programs with others such as reproductive health, maternal and child health, and tuberculosis.

Program Science Schedule

Capacity Building for STD/HIV Prevention:  Defining a Role for Academia
This session will bring together leaders from the program and policy arena and academic institutions to identify the key capacity building needs in the Program Science domain and how best to address them in different global contexts. It is anticipated that this session will lead to the development of future capacity building initiatives, while strengthening the connections between programs and science-based institutions.

New Federal Guidance on HIV Prevention and Care: Implications for providers of STD and sexual health services
This session will describe new federal guidance on HIV prevention and care that has been disseminated since 2013. These include recommendations on HIV treatment, prevention, testing, and case reporting in the United States.  The presentations will highlight recommendations directed to clinical providers, nonclinical providers, and health department staff who serve persons with HIV or persons at risk for acquiring HIV. They will describe strategies and tools to promote this new guidance, including practical steps for providers of STD and sexual health services and collaborations between health care facilities, health departments, and community-based organizations.

Federal Guidance Introduction and Schedule

STI Vaccines: Toward Global STI Prevention and Control 
This session will explore key findings from NIAID and WHO’s 2013 technical consultation on STI vaccines. The session will begin with an overview of global STI burden and why vaccines are a critical goal for STI prevention and control. Presentations will then examine the current status and exciting prospects for development of the three most promising and urgently needed STI vaccines, against herpes simplex virus, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. An overview of the process for development and licensure of vaccines from an industry perspective will highlight the “push” and “pull” forces that could guide investment in STI vaccines. The final presentation will provide a synopsis of the global roadmap for progress toward STI vaccine development and introduction.

At the end of the session, there will be an opportunity to discuss as a group how to advance the STI vaccine roadmap and accelerate STI vaccine development for global STI prevention.

DIS Interest Meeting
The Disease Intervention Services (DIS) Interest meeting is specifically to discuss and describe the newly funded DIS Training Center (DISTC). The purpose of the meeting is to review the objectives of the DISTC and discuss pertinent issues related to training the DIS across the United States.

Training: STD 101 
This workshop is intended for attendees of the STD Prevention Conference who are interested in STDs but have limited clinical or programmatic experience.  Participants may be community based organization employees, new DIS, program administrators, students, or researchers.   This session will provide participants with a basic understanding of STDs, their clinical issues, national trends, commonality with other diseases, prevention messages, and the STD public health system.   

STI Prevention Control in Latin America and the Caribbean
This session will cover:

1. Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of congenital syphilis in the Americas
2. Laboratory Update:  Quality Control and Quality Assurance of Syphilis Testing
3. Improving STI Surveillance Efforts

Field Services Interest Meeting
The Field Services Branch will offer three pre-conference public trainings in support of the 2014 STD AAPPS funding opportunity announcement. These courses will equip federal, state, and local public health field staff with current information regarding two of the three critical components of the STD AAPPS FOA assessment and assurance.

Courses to be offered:

1. Changes in Surveillance Case Definitions an Update - Revisions to the National Modifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) Including the National Electronic Telecommunications System for Surveillance (NETSS)
2. Internet Partner Services Guidelines
3. Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health

These trainings/updates will be delivered through subject matter presentations and interactive Q&A sessions.  

Site Visits

Implementing PrEP in STD Clinics Satellite
STD care settings serve large numbers of persons at increased risk of HIV who might benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and other prevention services. Among patients in clinical trials who took daily medication as prescribed, PrEP was up to 92% effective in preventing HIV acquisition. A pill containing a fixed-dose combination of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine was approved by the FDA in 2012 for use as PrEP, yet uptake has been slow among at-risk MSM and heterosexual persons in the United States. In this symposium, we will explore the role of STD health care venues in implementation of PrEP for their patients with indications for its use.

Training: How to Link Adolescents to Good Community Providers of Sexual Healthcare: Tips for Implementing the Project Connect Model in Your Community
Project Connect is an evidence-based, low-cost, sustainable intervention which connects adolescents to systematically identified providers of high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare in communities through development of a referral system.  It can be implemented by a variety of organizations, including schools, health departments, or community-based organizations. This workshop will describe the core elements of Project Connect and provide participants with a step-by-step guide to implementation, drawing from case study examples in 3 distinctly unique settings to troubleshoot ways to address potential barriers to implementation and highlight successes and lessons learned.  Participants will have an opportunity to interact with Project Connect’s designers and create plans for implementation.

Training: “Office hours” for Targeted Evaluation Planning for STD Program Staff
CDC Division of STD Prevention program evaluation staff will be available during this time to provide individualized, face-to-face technical assistance on evaluation-related questions and tasks for STD program planners and mangers.  STD Program managers are encouraged to use this opportunity to discuss their targeted evaluation plans and obtain feedback on their logic model, narrative, or matrix.  A sign-up sheet will be available in the room throughout the session to allow STD Program Managers to sign up for a particular time slot.
