Gay and bisexual men remain the population most heavily affected by HIV in the United States. CDC estimates men who have sex with men (MSM) represent approximately 2 percent of the U.S. population, but accounted for 61 percent of HIV infections that occurred in 2009 (29,300). In 2009, MSM accounted for 86 percent of new infections among white men, 81 percent of new infections among Hispanic men and 73 percent of new infections among black men.
