Description: This webinar is for intervention researchers focused on workplace health, safety, and well-being. Mental health problems among working people are a growing concern to workers, employers, and others. The development and testing of responses to this problem has traditionally relied on intervention research using experimental and related designs, such as cluster-randomised trials. But there is a dearth of such studies due to their great expense, long timelines, and other feasibility challenges. This presentation describes epidemiological methods to emulate experimental designs capturing changes in work and working conditions and associated changes in mental health. Specific examples will include changes at the level of job task, form of employment, and labor market. We argue that capturing natural experiments in this way offers a valuable and efficient complement to experimental studies.
