ERGONOMIC INTERVENTIONS IN SHIPYARDS
Hazard: When steel deck plates are welded together it is possible to get some distortion or rippling of the deck surface. This distortion is removed using the combination of torch and water spray. Work is primarily performed while kneeling or squatting on the deck, stressing the neck, back and legs.
Solution: A wheeled stool (see photo) allows the worker to sit rather than kneel or squat while removing deck distortion. Note, however, that this stool may be too high for this worker. The upper back and neck are still stressed; leg stress is minimized.
