Roller Sections on Shears

ERGONOMIC INTERVENTIONS IN SHIPYARDS

Hazard: Most shear presses drop the cut metal onto the floor or a sloped shelf at the rear of the shear. The shear operator or helper must then bend over or squat to pick up the material up off the floor or shelf. This task increases the stresses on the worker's back.

Solution: By adding roller sections to the back of the shear, the cut material is prevented from falling to the floor. The material can then be picked up at about knee level instead of floor level. This modification reduces the stress on the worker's back.
