ERGONOMIC INTERVENTIONS IN SHIPYARDS

Hazard: The block is the main unit of hull construction for a vessel. the larger the ship, the more blocks are required. The smaller the crane capacity, the more blocks are required. Since hull erection in a building dock is costly and more hazardous and stressful than dockside work, it is best to minimize the number of blocks necessary to complete the hull.

Solution: Large crane capacity, as shown in a Japanese Yard in the photo below, increases productivity and safety due to increased block size. The larger blocks enable more work to be done on the block dockside before being lifted into place for hull erection.
