Original creation date: October 2009

Image of publication Refuge Chamber Expectations Training: Instructor Guide and Lesson Plans

Refuge Chamber Expectations Training was created by a multidisciplinary team of researchers to inform miners of what it might be like psychologically and physically to be inside a refuge chamber over a period of time.

This material has been designed for underground miners at all skill levels. It can be integrated into required new miner training courses, annual refresher courses, or any other mine site training.

There are two components to NIOSH’s “Refuge Chamber Expectations Training” program:

  1. a multimedia Adobe Flash presentation, and
  2. Information Circular Report 9516 (Refuge Chamber Expectations Training: Instructor Guide and Lesson Plans)

The multimedia Adobe Flash presentation contains pictures, audio, video, and interviews with miners who have used a refuge chamber in an emergency. It must be run on a computer with Adobe Flash Player installed.

Refuge Chambers Expectation Training screen shotIC Report 9516 contains an explanation of the purpose for the training, the target audience, computer system requirements for using the training module, and instructions and background information for the course instructor concerning how to prepare to conduct classes, lesson plans for conducting group and individual training sessions, and training evaluation form. It is suggested that instructors carefully review this IC before attempting to use the computer based training module.

This computer based training program (bundled with the Information Circular) can be downloaded at no cost from this page. Alternatively, you may order a CD that includes a hard copy of IC Report 9516.
