Mining Product: SponCom - Spontaneous Combustion Assessment Software

Original creation date: October 1994

SponCom 2.0 logo of a stylized piece of coal with a flame

SPONCOM is software to aid mining operators, regulatory bodies, and consultants in the assessment of the spontaneous combustion risk of an underground mining operation.

The DOS-based SPONCOM expert system was originally developed by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). To develop the program, information was gathered and correlated with USBM's experimental studies to form the knowledge base for the program.

SponCom determines the coal's spontaneous combustion potential and what effect the coal properties, geologic and mining conditions, and mining methods have on the spontaneous combustion risk of the mining operation.

This new release 2.0 is a completely rewritten version of the earlier DOS-based SPONCOM and is designed to run on the Microsoft Windows® operating system. The technical output remains the same but is presented in a more user-friendly format.

To install, download the ZIP archive, unpack into a temporary folder and run SponCom2setup.exe.
