Mining Feature: NIOSH at SME 2016

Friday, February 19, 2016

NIOSH researchers and representatives will be at the 2016 Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) Annual Conference and Expo February 21–24 in Phoenix, Arizona. Check out the information below to find out when and where you can learn about NIOSH's latest research. Be sure to visit the NIOSH exhibit as well to see demonstrations of NIOSH products and research.

Drs. Jessica Kogel, Eric Lutz, and R. J. Matetic at SME

On February 8, Dr. Jessica Elzea Kogel became the Associate Director for Mining (ADM) in the Office of the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Dr. Kogel leads NIOSH’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), which coordinates the work of two NIOSH divisions: the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) and the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD). In 2013, Dr. Kogel served as President of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME), and continues to serve on the Board of Trustees of the SME Foundation. Meet Dr. Kogel in person at the SME Annual Conference & Expo at the NIOSH booth (#1211) on Tuesday, February 23, from 2:00–3:00 p.m.

On January 10, Dr. Eric A. Lutz became the Director of the NIOSH Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD). Dr. Lutz is the Chair of the Health and Safety Division of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME). Meet Dr. Lutz in person at the SME Annual Conference & Expo at the NIOSH booth (#1211) on Tuesday, February 23, from 3:30–4:30 p.m.

Dr. R. J. Matetic is the Director of the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD). Dr. Matetic will be presenting "Overview of NIOSH Research on Built-in-place Refuge Alternatives in Underground Coal Mines" (coauthored with other NIOSH researchers) at 3:25 pm on Tuesday, February 23, as part of the Coal & Energy: Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines II session. Meet Dr. Matetic in person at the SME Annual Conference & Expo at the NIOSH booth (#1211) on Tuesday, February 23, from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
