Abstract: Through this program, six Mississippi community groups are provided with funding to carry out lead poisoning education activities in their local counties. The short-term outcomes of interest in this evaluation are to increase the knowledge of program participants about the hazards of lead, the importance of primary prevention (e.g., removing lead hazards from the home, creating barriers between lead sources and children), and the importance of lead testing for all children under age 6.

The goal is that this increased awareness will lead to behavior change among participants. Consequently, the intermediate outcomes of interest are an increase in the primary prevention, an increase in the number of parents requesting lead tests for their children, and an increase in follow-through on referrals for these lead tests. The long-term outcomes of this program are to increase blood lead testing throughout Mississippi and reduce the overall number of children in the state with elevated blood lead levels. A related—but equally important—goal is to build community capacity and sustainability for this work in Mississippi’s numerous high-risk counties.
