Vermont

Objective: Assess the impact of educational mailers on risk perception and surveillance indicators among at-risk families (children with blood lead levels 5-9 ug/dL)

View the 2008 Vermont Logic Model

Abstract: In 2007, the Vermont Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (VT CLPPP) identified children with blood lead levels (BLL) 5–9 µg/dL as at risk for lead exposure. Educational materials were sent to families with children BLLs 5–9 µg/dL (capillary or venous). In addition, the blood lead screening guidelines were updated to recommend a follow-up test six months after the initial test. The VT CLPPP will assess parent’s knowledge, attitude, and behavior after the educational intervention. Particular focus will be given to parents’ perception of risk of lead risk as a hazard to children’s health and subsequent behavior change. This evaluation model will consider any proposal within the VT CLPPP’s capacity that presents valid and meaningful methods of risk assessment.

In 2007 the intervention threshold blood lead level was lowered to 5-9 micrograms/deciliter. VT CLPPP implemented an educational campaign to inform families about: 1. Test results and significance; 2. Safe lead practices; 3. Follow-up screening instructions.
