Youth Tobacco Surveillance - United States, 1998-1999
Youth Tobacco Surveillance - United States, 1998-1999
This report provides the first-ever multi-state evaluation data that will enable states to
design better tobacco control programs and to evaluate what is and isn't working in their
efforts to reduce youth tobacco use. This information - from how many youth have
successfully purchased cigarettes to how many would wear a tobacco image - will strengthen
states' ability to reduce tobacco use among young people and to prevent the influences that
might make them susceptible to tobacco use. The report, Youth Tobacco Surveillance United
States, 1998-1999, provides a complete summary of the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) and
state-level data from 13 states that conducted the Youth Tobacco Survey. The survey
supplements CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey and provides a wide breadth of data collected
from middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students. The full report will
be available online, after 4 p.m. EST, at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/.
