Picturing Health: Norman Rockwell and the Art of Illustration

Influence of Medical Illustrations Examined in New Exhibition

What:

From Norman Rockwell's images of a kindly country doctor in caring consultation with his patients to contemporary artworks noting the latest health regimens and medical revelations, health-related topics have long been a source for compelling artistic commentary. Images of health and well-being reflect the central theme of Picturing Health: Norman Rockwell and the Art of Illustration, on view at CDC's Global Health Odyssey from March 10 – June 4, 2008.

The exhibition, organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum, features rare, original paintings by Norman Rockwell that inspired Americans to view themselves and their physicians with optimism, and presented the notion that health is affected as much by our emotional lives as by our physical well-being. The outstanding Rockwell paintings explore the doctor/patient relationship and the importance of physical fitness and health and healing across the generations. They are accompanied by original works exploring similar themes by today’s most prominent visual artists, whose bold graphic statements offer a forceful counterpoint to Rockwell's painterly narratives.
