Image Libraries

The following libraries offer images that are either "Public Domain" (free use) or "Copyright Protected" (restricted, must obtain permission before use). Users must adhere to the usage guidelines posted on each site. Links to non-federal organizations are provided solely as a service to the public; these links do not constitute an endorsement of these organizations or their programs by CDC or the federal government, and none should be inferred. CDC is not responsible for the content of the individual organization Web pages found at these links.

Federal Agencies

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Public Health Image Library
The library offers an organized, universal electronic gateway to CDC's pictures. CDC welcomes public health professionals, the media, laboratory scientists, educators, students, and the worldwide public to use this material for reference, teaching, presentation, and public health messages. The content is organized into hierarchical categories of people, places, and science, and is presented as single images, image sets, and multimedia files.

National Highway Transportation Safety Administration Image Collection
The collection contains a variety of graphics including photographs and logos for use in your highway safety programs.

Bureau of Land Management Image Library
This Web site contains a photo library of Bureau of Land Management digital images.

National Park Service Digital Image Archives
The site provides links to public domain digital images of national parks, monuments, battlefields, historic sites and related areas.

Library of Congress

  • Prints & Photographs Online Catalog
    The catalog contains catalog records and digital images representing a rich cross-section of still pictures held by the Prints & Photographs Division and, in some cases, other units of the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress offers broad public access to these materials as a contribution to education and scholarship. The collections of the Division include photographs, fine and popular prints and drawings, posters, and architectural and engineering drawings. While international in scope, the collections are particularly rich in materials produced in, or documenting the history of, the United States and the lives, interests and achievements of the American people.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)


U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Digital Library
The Library is a searchable collection of selected images, historical artifacts, audio clips, publications, and video and that are in the public domain.

U.S. Forestry Service Photo Gallery
The Gallery has thousands of copyright free wildlife, fish, wildflower and environmental education photographs, donated by Forest Service employees, partners and volunteers.

U.S. Geological Survey Multimedia Gallery
The Gallery is a one-stop collection of videos, photography, and other imagery. All items in this gallery are considered public domain.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Photo Library
The library captures the work, observations, and studies that are carried on by the scientists, engineers, commissioned officers, and administrative personnel that make up NOAA. It also an attempt to capture NOAA's scientific heritage, which is in fact a heritage shared by much of the physical and environmental science communities in the United States today. To date, over 32,000 images have been digitized and reside in the online NOAA Photo Library.

National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) Image Exchange
The NASA Image Exchange is a search engine that pulls images from across NASA's Web space.

Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Image Gallery
EPA maintains several collections of photographs and other images available for use by the public. Please note that while photographs and graphic materials produced by the federal government are not subject to copyright restriction, some photographs included in these collections may be copyrighted. Please observe carefully all rights and permissions information.

The PBIC Image Library is a searchable collection of free, real-world images relating to walking and bicycling.

Design for Health
The site offers health and built environment photos from Health By Design's Flikr image bank and PowerPoint presentations.
