As a committed public health partner, the mission of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) is to advance the specialty practice of school nursing to improve the health and academic success of all students. In support of National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), NASN became the new blogger on the block by hosting an hour-long blogger briefing on December 4, 2012, to raise awareness and increase seasonal influenza vaccine uptake. Four organizations participated in the briefing: Moms that Vax, Immunization Action Coalition (IAC), National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), and Parents of Kids with Infectious Diseases (pKids). The blogger briefing focused on the important role school nurses play in getting school-age children and their families vaccinated each year.

Featured experts were Nichole Bobo, NASN Director of Nursing Education, and Deb Pontius, a school nurse from Nevada. Both discussed the following points:

  • Role of the school nurse
  • Why schools school nurses?
  • Why target school-age children?
  • How does vaccinating school-age children impact herd immunity?
  • What resources are available to support school nurses educate their school communities about the importance of flu vaccine?
  • What are the advantages and barriers of using schools as a point of service for the delivery of flu vaccine?

After the briefing, the guest bloggers were asked to write up a blog post on their experience to help spread the important public health messages presented during the briefing; pKids carried the message forward.

NASN continues to provide resources to its members. This flu season, the NASN Seasonal Influenza web page has received 2,000 hits, over 700 copies of the seasonal influenza educational campaign materials have been requested, and monthly influenza updates are provided in the NASN electronic digest.
