About NDEP

NDEP is a program of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that works with partners and organizations to help people prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and, for those with diabetes, manage their diabetes and prevent complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) started the program in 1997. Since then, hundreds of national, regional, and local organizations have partnered with NDEP to deliver quality diabetes education resources and strategies throughout the United States.

NDEP’s strategies and materials are based on science. National clinical trials have shown that:

  • People with prediabetes, or at high risk for type 2 diabetes, can prevent or delay diabetes by losing a moderate amount of weight and engaging in regular physical activity.
  • People with diabetes can prevent diabetes complications such as blindness, kidney problems, and amputations by controlling their blood sugar (glucose), blood pressure, and cholesterol.
NDEP has audience-tested diabetes education resources tailored to a wide range of groups. Partners have helped NDEP develop, test, collect, and evaluate toolkits and guides, web content, booklets, tip sheets, videos, and more for:
  • People at risk for diabetes
  • People with diabetes and their families
  • Community-based organizations and individuals
  • Health care providers
  • Businesses and work sites
NDEP provides access to culturally and linguistically appropriate resources. NDEP has worked with its national and community-based partners to gather and develop tailored diabetes education resources for:
  • African Americans and people of African Ancestry
  • American Indians and Alaska Natives
  • Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders
  • Hispanics and Latinos

NDEP’s resources are copyright free. You can use any of NDEP’s messages, materials, and tools copyright free. You can adapt them for your population and co-brand resources if you follow the NDEP co-branding guidelines [PDF-25KB].

Partners are key to NDEP’s success. Partner organizations and individuals have worked with NDEP at every step. NDEP helps partners find the right tools, stay informed about diabetes prevention and management, and connect with others working in similar areas.
