ഭൂമി അതിന്റെ അച്ചുതണ്ടിൽ സ്വയം ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്യാനെടുക്കുന്ന സമയമാണ് ദിവസം, സമയം അളക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു ഏകകവുമാണിത്.‌ ഒരു ഭൗമദിനത്തിന്റെ ശരാശരി സമയം 86,400 സെക്കന്റുകൾ ആണ്.[1] 1967 വരെ സമയത്തിന്റെ ചെറിയ അളവുകളായ മണിക്കൂർ, മിനുറ്റ്, സെക്കന്റ് എന്നിവ ഒരു ദിവസത്തിനെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയായിരുന്നു നിർവചിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
