Uniform Definitions for Self-directed Violence

Cover of report Self-directed violence (SDV) is an important public health issue in the United States and worldwide. Though numerous organizations collect information on fatal and non-fatal SDV, there is considerable confusion about how to define the problem. To address the lack of uniform definitions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed Self-directed Violence Surveillance: Uniform Definitions and Recommended Data Elements to improve and standardize data collected on self-directed violence. Consistent data allow researchers to better determine the scope of self-directed violence, identify high-risk groups, and monitor the effects of prevention programs. The definitions and data elements were developed in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.
