Training/Research Opportunities in the CDC Streptococcus Laboratory

Opportunities exist in many exciting areas concerning the molecular epidemiology and biology of pathogenic streptococci and pneumococci. Contact BBeall@cdc.gov for information concerning research and training in this laboratory.

• The ASM/CDC program in Infectious Disease and Public Health Microbiology is sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The goal of ASM/CDC Fellowship is to support the development of new approaches, methodologies and knowledge in infectious disease prevention and control in areas within the public health mission of the CDC. The fellowship allows one to perform research in residence headquartered at a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) location. • The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Laboratory Fellowship Program, sponsored by APHL and CDC, trains and prepares scientists for careers in public health laboratories and supports public health initiatives related to infectious disease research. The EID Advanced Laboratory Training Fellowship is a one-year program designed for bachelor's or master's level scientists, with emphasis on the practical application of technologies, methodologies and practices related to emerging infectious diseases. The EID Laboratory Research Fellowship is a two-year program designed for doctoral level (PhD, MD or DVM) scientists to conduct high-priority research in infectious diseases. • The International EID Laboratory Fellowship Program is a one year program designed for non-US citizen, doctoral level (PhD, MD, DVM, or equivalent) scientists with an emphasis on professional development in laboratory related aspects of infectious diseases. International EID laboratory fellows are placed in US public health laboratories at the local, state, and federal (CDC) level which best match the training and research needs of the fellow and demonstrate a commitment and capacity to host an international scientist. Other opportunities: Training in streptococcal/pneumococcal serology, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and DNA sequence based strain surveillance is available to individuals from laboratories with a demonstrated need.

Scientists with externally provided salaries are welcome to inquire concerning research/training projects in the Streptococcus Laboratory. This laboratory has a history of several successful collaborations of this nature. Often researchers bring their own clinical isolate collections for study in our laboratory in order to answer questions concerning strain features and to simultaneously receive hands-on training.
