The OPHSS Director
Chesley Richards, MD, MPH, FACP is the Director of the Office of Public Health Scientific Services (OPHSS). In this role, Dr. Richards is a key advisor to the CDC Director and oversees the National Center for Health Statistics, publication of the MMWR, The Guide to Community Preventive Services, and Vital Signs. He also is responsible for the Epidemic Intelligence Service and other scientific training programs and a broad range of cross cutting epidemiology, public health surveillance, and laboratory services. OPHSS has approximately 1,000 staff and campuses in Atlanta, Georgia; Hyattsville; Maryland; and Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
Chief Public Health Informatics Officer
Brian Lee, MPH is the first Chief Public Health Informatics Officer for the Office of Public Health Scientific Services. He joined CDC in 2012 as the Deputy Director of the Informatics Research & Development Activity, where he provided informatics expertise in the design and coordination of a research portfolio, working across CDC. His experience with the agency began in 2006 as a consultant on multiple informatics projects. He holds a Master of Public Health with a specialization in public health informatics from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health.
Chief Science Officer
Robin Wagner, PhD, MS serves is the Chief Science Officer for the Office of Public Health Scientific Services. She has worked in the environmental health and injury fields for over 30 years in government, university and non-profit settings. Dr. Wagner returns to CDC after serving six years at the U.S. National Institutes of Health as the Director of the Division of Statistical Analysis and Reporting. Dr. Wagner has a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a M.S. in Technology and Policy from MIT, and a Sc.B. in Neuroscience and Behavior from Brown University.
Associate Director for Management and Operations
Cindy P. Johnson is the Associate Director for Management and Operations for the Office of Public Health Scientific Services. She joined CDC’s Office of Workforce and Career Development in 2004 while that office was being established. As the office evolved, so did Ms. Johnson’s roles. She has served as an Extramural Coordinator, Advisor to the Management Officer and Chief Management Official, and as a Budget Planner. She also provided guidance on contract development and served as a liaison to CDC’s Procurement and Grants Office. Ms. Johnson received a Presidential Letter in 2004 for her accomplishments in CDC’s competitive sourcing efforts.
