Ongoing Research

Chemical hazards are encountered in many workplaces.  Fundamental to its mission, NIOSH research on chemical hazards improves worker safety and health and empowers employers and workers to create safe and healthy workplaces through control of hazardous exposures. This research takes many forms, such as engineering controls, developing analytical methods to measure chemical concentrations, evaluating the effectiveness of respirators, and countless others.  Leading these efforts are the several divisions and programs, listed below, each involved in research assessing workplace chemical hazards and finding solutions to reducing the associated risk to workers.
