Additional Resources

This is a list of chemical-related resources from NIOSH and other government agencies.  They contain acute and chronic health effects information about exposures to hazardous chemicals.  They also contain chemical information such as reactivity, explosiveness, and other chemical and physical properties.  Other information contained within these resources includes guidance on personal protective equipment, analytical methods, medical tests, and biomonitoring.

Hazardous Drug Exposures in Health Care

Millions of U.S. healthcare workers are potentially exposed to hazardous drugs in the workplace, including pharmacy and nursing personnel, physicians, environmental service workers, and many others.

Prevention through Design (PtD)

Prevention through Design is a program that was developed to prevent or reduce occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities through the inclusion of prevention considerations in all designs that impact workers.

Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) Reports

HHEs are field investigations of possible occupational health hazards by various exposures or conditions, including exposure to hazardous chemicals.  The reports contain NIOSH recommendations for controlling these hazards in the workplace.

Control Banding

Control banding is a technique used to guide the assessment and management of workplace risks. It helps determine a control measure based on a range or “band” of hazards (such as skin/eye irritant, very toxic, carcinogenic, etc.) and potential for exposures (small, medium, large exposure).

Hierarchy of Controls

A hierarchy of controls is used to minimize or eliminate hazards in the workplace based on the effectiveness of the method of control. 

Emergency Response Resources

This is a collection of resources that is designed to provide information for emergency responders to control exposure to hazardous chemicals and other agents they could encounter during response incidents.

Hazard Controls

These are 1-2 page, user-friendly documents that describe control techniques that have been documented to substantially reduce hazardous exposures to workers in a particular application/industry process.

Provides information about dermal exposure to chemicals and other hazardous agents.

Veterinary Safety and Health: Chemical Safety

Veterinary medicine and animal care workers can be exposed to chemical hazards while providing care services for animals.  This page is a collection of resources and recommendations that address these workplace hazards.
